Society Insurance is seeking an experienced Accountant II to join our Finance team. The Accountant II position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the financial management and performance of insurance operations while gaining valuable experience in a dynamic and regulated industry.  This position is a vital role responsible for performing accounting functions such as maintenance of general ledger, accounts payable, and accounts receivable.  This position requires an understanding of insurance accounting principles, regulatory requirements, and industry-specific practices.   

About the Role 

  • Ensures accounting quality and service standards; analyzes and solves quality and service problems; and recommends system improvements.
  • Performs treasury management functions including maintaining accurate cash flow by reviewing and anticipating deposits and checks written on a daily basis, online banking, reporting, and fraud prevention.
  • Prepares financial statements through general ledger reconciliations, collects information, enters data into spreadsheets, and journal entries.
  • Completes month-end processes by balancing general ledger accounts, filing sales tax returns, and reinsurance reports.
  • Maintains fixed-asset software by entering in newly purchased items; deleting all items sold, traded, or junked; reconciling account and month-end; and tracking depreciation.
  • Works with our investment advisor in preparing monthly, quarterly, and annual transaction summaries and journal entries.
  • Prepares compliance reporting, statutory filings, and tax filings from local, state, and federal agencies.
  • Assists in providing other departments with reports or data as requested.
  • Possesses ability to maintain confidential and sensitive information.
  • Performs the approval of employee expense reports and assists in the administration of employee expense reimbursement software.
  • Works with auditors by providing information/documents requested.
  • Works with the Financial Planning & Analysis team on expense analysis and related projects.
  • Reconciles between data flow from operational systems to the accounting system.

What it Will Take

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and 3+ years of accounting experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative and manage multiple projects; well-developed follow-through skills.
  • Experience preparing financial statements.
  • Experience using accounting software to perform tasks related to general ledger maintenance, trial balance production, accounts payable, cash account reconciliations, and other accounting functions.
  • Excellent in Microsoft Office, especially Excel including advanced functions such as V-Lookup, pivot tables, formulas, and charts.
  • Property and Casualty insurance accounting experience highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of investment accounting highly desirable.
