Marian University invites applicants for the position of Assistant Professor, Nursing Resource & Simulation Center Coordinator, starting fall 2024. Successful candidates will have a strong commitment to undergraduate education, student engagement, as well as service to the college and community. Marian University is an institution that values innovative teaching, advising and mentoring. All faculty participate in advising and mentoring, with other related duties as assigned.
Teaching responsibilities include four courses each semester, as well as contributing to our graduate, adult accelerated and online programs, as demand requires. Candidates should exhibit skill and enthusiasm in teaching undergraduates and developing innovative experiential learning opportunities in the surrounding community and be willing to participate in all phases of program, departmental, college, and university activities. Normal credit load is 12 credits per semester (fall & spring semesters).
Primary Responsibilities:
- Manages and administers the Nursing Resource & Simulation Center by:
- Supporting the philosophy and mission of Marian University and the Nursing Programs;
- Maintaining a positive work environment by cooperating in a professional manner with the University community;
- Using a self-directed, innovative approach to assess current operations in an effort to develop practical action plans to improve the quality of the NRSC;
- Advising and consulting with the program chairpersons, the undergraduate and graduate curriculum committees, and individual faculty;
- Establishing and updating teaching/learning policies and standard practices related to nursing competencies and simulation experiences;
- Coordinating and assisting with simulation in the nursing program- undergraduates. RN-BSN and masters.
- Establishing and overseeing procedures for external use of laboratory equipment;
- Coordinating the security of material resources within the NRSC;
- Assisting with recruitment and educational experiences by organizing tours and simulation sessions for internal/external groups and/or individuals; and
- Collaborating with the program chairpersons and the ADON to evaluate and recommend instructional staff including:
- Assisting in the interviewing and selection of staff,
- Developing and implementing an orientation/training program for staff,
- Supervising NRSC staff,
- Determining workloads and assignments,
- Completing evaluations of NRSC staff
- Maintains the nursing resource and simulation inventory system by:
- Collaborating with the program chairpersons, makes recommendations to the ADON regarding budget needs for the NRSC;
- Making formal requests for new skills/simulation equipment in conjunction with appropriate nursing faculty to the appropriate curriculum committee;
- Pursuing various funding sources for NRSC needs (e.g., grants)
- Ensuring the completion of a written annual report to include the inventory of the NRSC, space/equipment usage, and recommendations for change;
- Maintaining appropriate inventory of teaching/training supplies for the NRSC;
- Ensuring safe storage of hazardous materials, including medications;
- Overseeing the collection and disposal of waste materials according to regulations; and
- Coordinating and scheduling utilization of NRSC hours and space.
- Participate in and contributes to the optimal functioning of the NRSC by:
- Establishing and maintaining relationships with vendors, agencies, and clinical experts for the purpose of assisting facilitation of NRSC development and service-education partnerships;
- Obtaining student input through surveys or instructional evaluations regarding services in the NRSC;
- Communicating concerns to the appropriate nursing faculty, program chairperson or Dean related to NRSC issues;
- Providing advice and orientation to instructors regarding NRSC laboratory procedures, location and use of materials, and the operation of equipment;
- Ensuring that appropriate assistance is available for consultation with students and faculty related to the use of materials; i.e., manikin, models, skills equipment, and other learning materials;
- Recommending, delegating and/or performing general cleaning, maintenance or repairs of equipment in the NRSC; and
- Initiating and coordinating approved NRSC renovations and repairs.
- Participates in and contributes to a safe environment in the NRSC by:
- Keeping current with safety regulations;
- Establishing, implementing and monitoring safety policies and procedures;
- Checking and maintaining safety equipment; and
- Providing training and enforcement of safety procedures to individuals, including faculty, students and staff.
- Participates in and contributes to the learning needs of students in the nursing programs by:
- Serving as a resource for faculty and NRSC instructional staff regarding student learning needs;
- Serving as a resource for faculty utilizing simulation in classroom/lab activities;
- Independently, or in conjunction with other faculty/college personnel, assisting students in realizing course objectives through utilization of the NRSC;
- Providing student progress feedback to faculty as appropriate;
- Facilitating tutoring of student who require remedial assistance or additional assistance with learning; and
- Utilizing instructional methodologies that promote student achievement of student learning outcomes.
- Within 6 months of employment complete certification with the International Nursing Association of Clinical Simulation and Learning.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the ADON.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Holds a minimum of a master’s degree in nursing and is licensed as a registered nurse in the State of Wisconsin.
- A minimum of two years current nursing experience.
- Knowledge and experience in nursing education and educational pedagogy.
- Skill in the use of current technology used in the nursing practice arena, computer learning systems, and multimedia.
- Experience with simulation learning including development of simulation scenarios, implementation, and evaluation of simulation.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Strong general nursing subject knowledge.
- Ability to prepare and organize demonstration materials for experiential learning.
- Ability to set priorities on own initiative.
- Demonstrates leadership and team-building skills to work in a team environment.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule and accommodate change.
- CPR certification or must obtain within first 6 months of employment.
- Ability to ensure a safe and healthy work environment by complying with university health and safety policies, standard practices, and programs in keeping with occupational health and safety legislation and regulation.
