The City of Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, is a beautiful and thriving community of 44,678 located at the foot of Lake Winnebago. We are seeking an Auxiliary Side Load Operator within the Solid Waste Division.  Work is physical in nature.  Specific duties include general road maintenance (potholes, crack filling, leaf collection, storm and sanitary sewer maintenance and infrastructure repairs/maintenance); downtown refuse collection of pedestrian containers by hand; residential bulky waste collection (will-call specialized pick-ups); fill in for regular refuse collection (safely and efficiently collect daily refuse from City residential homes); repair, assemble and deliver garbage carts; snow removal; and routine vehicle maintenance to include greasing, washing and inspecting trucks for damage); and other duties as assigned in the Construction & Maintenance Division.

Normal scheduled hours are 6:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. (summer) and 7:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. (winter)

Qualifications and/or knowledge and willingness to learn the following include: Working knowledge of proper side load truck operation and the ability to drive and operate side load truck in a safe and efficient manner; working knowledge of side load truck maintenance procedures and the ability to consistently perform routine maintenance according to an established schedule; working knowledge of collection routes, schedules, collection points and efficient routes to disposal site; working knowledge of traffic rules and ordinances; thorough working knowledge of the City’s residential refuse handling requirements; thorough knowledge of safety hazards and safe work practices and ability to consistently apply that knowledge in the performance of daily work; ability to courteously explain refuse packaging and collection requirements in response to citizen questions; and ability to perform manual labor under varying weather conditions and temperature extremes.

Minimum Training and Experience includes: Graduation from high school or equivalent, and previous truck driving experience.

SALARY RANGE: We offer a competitive compensation package $21.65 – $23.51/hour ($27.87 – $29.73/hour with employer health benefits and WRS match) based upon knowledge, skills, and abilities with potential to receive additional step increases based on meeting and/or exceeding goals/expectations; annual COLA and step increases pending City Council approval of budgets; and future promotional opportunities in alignment with succession and career path.
