POSITION TITLE: Career Specialist and Student Advocate
REPORTS TO: CTE Coordinator & Homeless Liaison
COORDINATES WITH: CTE Teachers, School Counselors, Local Businesses/Organizations, district staff
SALARY RANGE: $20-$24/hour
CONTRACT LENGTH: 191 days
ACCOUNTABILITY OBJECTIVES
The Career Specialist coordinates the educational activities necessary for the career readiness success of all high school students, and connects students to career technical education opportunities, especially focusing on supporting special population students.
The Student Advocate will serve as the primary case manager to establish positive relationships with Fond du Lac High School students and families who are experiencing homelessness, and work to remove barriers to their academic success.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
STUDENT ADVOCATE
Use a professional, asset based lens approach to probleming-solving barriers to education for students and families experiencing homelessness
Complete necessary documentation for identification, Student Needs Assessment, academic data, EHYC Grant goals, and ongoing case management for students experiencing homelessness
Monitor attendance and resolve barriers (i.e. transportation) in order for students to access school daily
Monitor academic progress and develop academic support plan as necessary, including establishing weekly/biweekly check-ins, tutoring, creating graduation and post-graduation plans and facilitating teacher/student/family communication regarding academic supports and expectations
Attend FHS Student Services Department meetings weekly
Ensure that student’s basic needs (food, shelter, clothing) are being met. As necessary, coordinate with the school social worker, school counselor, principal, community agencies, homeless grant specialist and homeless liaison to meet identified needs.
Attend all meetings and trainings identified by the DPI as part of the Education of Homeless Youth and Children (EHYC) grant allocation.
Create a school-wide awareness of for student and staff of rights, available supports and responsibilities of students experiencing homelessness
Maintain confidentiality of privileged information
CAREER SPECIALIST
Collaborate with the Career Technical Education (CTE) and Student Service Team Leader.
Collect and report student career- and college-ready data required by DPI and Federal grants.
Plan and organize career instructional activities such as college and career enrichment, post-secondary fairs and job fairs.
Maintain college-and-career readiness student/staff software database and provide classroom support to help engage every student in building the skills, knowledge, and plans for future success regardless of background, ability, or pathway.
Assist team with student portfolios and course planner tools.
Communicate and coordinate with area businesses to set up job shadow and service learning opportunities.
Coordinate partnerships with CTE departments, technical colleges, businesses and the Envision Greater Fond du Lac (Chamber of Commerce and Economic Development organizations)
Coordinate Armed Forces and college visits.
Assist CTE teachers and school counselors plan and execute college-and-career readiness events.
Perform duties associated with the Perkins V Grant: Senior follow-up survey and Junior/Senior survey data collection. Collect, verify, analyze, and validate data reported using data collection tools.
Collaborate with all K-12 career initiatives.
Coordinate individual teacher training on Career Clusters and Programs of Study.
Determine needs and maintain career media and resources.
Perform duties associated with post-secondary outreach.
Meets with students one-to-one and/or classroom setting to provide career guidance and support.
Assist students with creating employment portfolios: resume, cover letter & follow-up communications.
Participate in department and school meetings, and parent/guardian meetings as needed.
OTHER EXPECTATIONS
Maintain regular and predictable attendance.
Remain free of any alcohol or illegal substance in the workplace in compliance with Policy 3122.01 throughout their employment in the District.
Perform additional duties and responsibilities necessary within the scope of this employment position as assigned by the Superintendent.
Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS: Experience in the following areas:
Providing excellent customer service internally and externally
Performing accounting/fiscal support activities (e.g., processing invoices or requisitions, verifying deposits, completing payment request forms, running accounting reports, etc.)
Utilizing Microsoft Office (e.g., Excel, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint), or Google Applications to proofread and maintain data
Preparing or coordinating conferences, workshops, advisory committees, or workgroup meetings
Well-qualified applicants will also have experience in managing multiple priorities and managing/creating/monitoring/updating web page content
