The Procurement Category Management Director is responsible for the overall commercial relationship with Key Suppliers. This individual provides a leadership role in the development of sourcing strategies leading to Sourcing to support the Operational, Commercial and the Technical requirements of the organization.  As a result, the Mercury Organization and the Sourcing team, in particular, depends on the Category Management Director to proactively communicate with the global supply base and internal customers to ensure that all direct purchased material is sourced at the lowest total cost, including risk management, and conforming to the required standards needed to meet the parts’ demand at all Mercury Marine locations worldwide for operations and service needs.

Supplier Relationship Management:  

Lead the Category Teams in the aspects of Supplier Relationship Management by establishing and executing strategic sourcing strategies to identify technology and sources that would be needed for current and future business needs. As a thought leader in Value Chain practices, identify and mitigate risk in the supply network, foster successful and effective business communications/relationships with suppliers and encourage Early Supplier Involvement in the High Performance Product Development (HPPD) projects while supporting ongoing production to meet customer expectations and business requirements.  Demonstrated behaviors should include the ability to effectively:

  • Manage suppliers and supplier relationships to include:
    • A well-defined strategic plan for the category and supply base
    • An effective supplier performance and review process in a manner such that the supply base delivers performance in the top quartile relative to the other core-supplier network
    • Cost details and analysis
    • Green Sourcing and promoting Supply Chain Sustainability
    • Continuous improvement efforts for both process and product applications
  • Identify areas of risk in the supply chain and assist in minimizing or eliminating the root causes.

Cross Functional Collaboration:

Facilitate close communication related to the procurement process to all other functions within the organization including finance, operations and engineering. Demonstrated behaviors should include the ability to effectively:

  • Demonstrate a high level of personal integrity, credibility and trust to enable proactive communications and build stakeholder trust
  • Ensure the team is given an opportunity to actively participate in the decisions being made
  • Facilitate cross functional discussions to ensure clarity and purpose in communications with the suppliers
  • Develop and maintain effective business relationships to include technical support that ensure proactive discussion and communication of emerging issues and current concerns occur across all project stakeholders

Cost and Contract Management:

Independently, and in collaboration with Suppliers, employ contract and tooling management strategies to manage mutual expectations and relationships, control risk and cost to the extent feasible, and contribute to organizational profitability/success.  Demonstrated behaviors should include the ability to effectively:

  • Lead negotiations culminating in a contract that minimizes risk and cost for the organization
  • Utilize the knowledge of contract law to manage, organize, create and develop a plan for a contract negotiation by establishing commercial requirements, statement of work and supplier performance evaluation criteria
  • Promote the use of cost modeling tools and/or industry cost benchmarking to effectively analyze supplier bids before project award
  • Assess supplier performance against the evaluation criteria documented in an executed contract; commending those whose performance is as expected or higher while mitigating the risk of those whose performance is below expected levels
  • Promote in-depth analysis of cost information provided by suppliers in line with industry costs and per contractual terms and conditions
  • Develop and maintain effective business relationships to include technical support that ensure proactive discussion and communication of emerging issues and current concerns occur across all project stakeholders

Project Management:

Manage projects for (re) sourcing of Components in a collaborative, thorough and detail oriented manner such that Quality, Cost and Timelines to support the milestones for the Project/Program are met or exceeded. Demonstrated behaviors should include the ability to effectively:

  • Meet project and program milestones for Cost, Quality and Delivery
  • Establish a sustainable supply chain
  • Understand and catalog cost details for the parts and the tooling (if required)
  • Lead any changes in the supply chain with the support of the teams with strong focus on communication and execution

Continuous Process Improvement:

Independently and/or in collaboration with internal and external working partners, define, measure, analyze, improve and control processes, programs and supplier performance to effectively, efficiently and proactively achieve strategic business initiatives and/or key performance indicators.  Demonstrated behaviors should include the ability to effectively:

  • Manage projects necessary to execute continuous improvement plans in accordance with the category strategy

Job Competency Requirements

Experience / Professional Credentials:

  • 10+ years of experience in Sourcing, supply chain management or engineering
  • C.P.M./CPSM and CPIM/CSCP certification preferred
  • LSS Green Belt preferred

Education Requirements:

  • BS/BA in Supply Chain Management, Engineering, Operations Management or a closely related business field is required
  • MBA is preferred

Subject Matter Knowledge:

  • Sourcing Procedures, laws and standards
  • Manage Sourcing Business Rules, Negotiation
  • Manage Supplier Agreements
  • Product and Process Knowledge of Category

Baseline Skill Expectations:

Expert level skills and demonstrated proficiency requirements include:

Business Travel Expectations

  • This position will require occasional day and/or overnight travel by auto or airplane, up to 20%.
