Financial Aid Counselor

This position promotes and supports the learning experience of Marian University students by, providing support to both the Financial Aid Office and the Office of Admission by processing financial aid and meeting with prospective and current students and parents to educate them on the financial aid processes in an effort to recruit and retain qualified students.

Essential Functions:

Counseling: 30%

  1. Counsels and builds relationship with prospective and current students and families by assisting with the financial aid application procedure and need analysis through multiple modalities (text, phone, in-person, email, and mail).
  2. Provides timely and direct financial aid student services to meet the needs of new and current students.


Financial Aid Program Management 55%:

  1. Maintains a working knowledge of financial need analysis and award systems; awards financial aid to new and continuing students in accordance with federal, state, institutional, and other policies and procedures.
  2. Conducts verification for freshman and transfer students, new and current.
  3. Certifies alternative loans for Marian University students.
  4. Maintains a working knowledge of financial aid regulations and PowerFAIDS.
  5. Provides counseling and advising to prospective and current students and parents on the availability, process and types of financial aid.
  6. Coordinates the creation and preparation of financial aid forms and annual publications as well as website information, specifically in conjunction with freshman and transfer recruitment.
  7. Recommends changes to the Counselor Procedure Manual and provides training to staff in areas of responsibility.
  8. Management of partnership programs including documentation, process management, and collaboration with individuals associated with partnership.
  9. Award financial aid to non-standard term programs, including graduate, online, and flex programs.
  10. Maintains confidentiality and security in regard to all information and records.
  11. Maintains a positive work environment by cooperating in a professional manner with the University community.
  12. Work to continuously improve data-sharing between the Office of Business and Finance and Office of Financial Aid to best serve the needs of the student population.
  13. Represent the office of Financial Aid on-campus events such as individual registrations, campus tours, open houses, New Student Registrations, and payment solutions presentations.


Federal Work Study Administration: 10%

  1. Operates the Federal Work Study program as a part of financial aid packaging and reconciliation with the business office.


Other Responsibility:

  1. Performs other work-related duties as necessary or as assigned.


Education, Experience, and Skills Required:

  1. Bachelor’s degree required.
  2. Experience in a college admission and/or financial aid work environment.
  3. Strong oral and written communication and interpersonal skills.
  4. Ethical comportment and high regard for confidentiality.
  5. Willingly support the Mission and Core Values of the University.


Education, Experience, and Skills Preferred:

  1. Master’s degree.
  2. Bilingual, Spanish-speaking.
  3. Prior Power Campus and Power FAIDS experience
