Description
The School District is seeking a full-time teacher of the deaf and hard of hearing (DHH). Interested candidates should function effectively as part of a team, demonstrate skill in assessment and intervention planning, and implement a child-centered orientation in the provision of inclusive special education services.
The following skills are essential for this position to meet the needs of our learners:
- American Sign Language (ASL) Proficiency: Fluency in ASL is crucial for effective communication with DHH students who primarily use sign language as their mode of communication.
- Understanding of Deaf Culture: Familiarity with Deaf culture helps in creating an inclusive and supportive learning environment for DHH students. Understanding cultural nuances and perspectives is vital for effective teaching.
- Knowledge of Special Education Laws and Practices: Understanding laws such as the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act is essential for providing appropriate accommodations and support for DHH students.
- Differentiated Instruction Techniques: DHH students have diverse learning needs. A DHH teacher should be adept at using various instructional strategies to accommodate different learning styles and abilities.
- Assistive Technology Skills: Familiarity with assistive technologies like FM systems, hearing aids, cochlear implants, and visual aids can help DHH students access the curriculum effectively.
- Collaboration and Communication Skills: DHH teachers often work closely with other professionals such as speech therapists, audiologists, and special education coordinators. Strong collaboration and communication skills are essential for effective teamwork.
- Patience and Empathy: Teaching DHH students can be challenging, and patience is key. Empathy and understanding help in building trust and rapport with students and their families.
- Classroom Management Skills: Effective classroom management techniques ensure a positive and productive learning environment for DHH students.
- Assessment and Progress Monitoring: DHH teachers should be skilled in assessing student progress and adjusting instruction accordingly. They should also be knowledgeable about appropriate assessment tools for DHH students.
- Advocacy Skills: DHH teachers often serve as advocates for their students, ensuring that their needs are met both in the classroom and in the broader educational system.
- Cultural Competence and Sensitivity: Sensitivity to cultural and linguistic differences within the DHH community is crucial for providing culturally responsive instruction.
