Responsible for leading and managing engineering teams to achieve project goals, capital plans, and strategic initiatives. Has the technical expertise coupled with the ability to coach Associates successfully while overseeing multiple complex projects. Is seen as a role model and is sought after by Associates across the organization for experience and guidance in dealing with challenging and in-depth technical situations.
Job Duties & Responsibilities
1. Talent Management
a. Advocates for effective execution of the performance management process by collaborating with direct report/s to set clear objectives, goals and expectations. Conducts regular coaching and constructive feedback discussions to review performance and goal progress, assist with challenges, and identify strengths and development areas, all to support Associate professional and career development, while increasing engagement and motivation.
b. Supports workforce planning and talent acquisition strategies by effectively staffing and hiring diverse talent for the organization.
c. Addresses Associate relations and performance issues in a timely manner and/or makes appropriate decisions relative to performance challenges.
2. Overall Scope
a. Possesses highly advanced knowledge and specialized understanding of professional engineering concepts, principles, practices and procedures.
b. Recognized as an expert within the organization and within the field.
c. Accountable for the performance and results of the assigned engineering staff with focus in the areas of process design, equipment specification, plant layout, project management, capital project management, development and implementation of best manufacturing practices, and continuous equipment/plant/product improvement.
d. Provides process and equipment design specification to new product development stage gate system and new technology department.
e. Provide supervision and guidance to facilitate learning, mentoring, enhance skills & knowledge, and improve performance.
f. Exhibit leadership and set the example to drive high standards of performance, quality, and safety.
g. Oversee engineering activities and work with others to identify, recommend and implement cost-effective solutions or alternative processes that improve efficiency and productivity.
h. Manage and coordinate engineers in the research, design, and development of complex apparatus, components, equipment, and machinery.
i. Supervise projects, resources, and engineering efforts to coordinate projects from initial design through production.
j. Facilitate communication to establish positive morale and engagement.
k. Solicit feedback and recommendations related to procedures, performance, quality, safety, cost savings initiatives, and other functional information.
l. Assess the team’s strengths and weaknesses in the areas such as communication, involvement, recognition, commitment, willingness to learn, skill level, etc. in order to coach, develop, and motivate Associates overall performance.
m. Develop appropriate action plans and objectives to challenge team members to improve and develop their skills and technical abilities.
n. Accountable for the culture of the area and showing support for the culture in all activities.
o. Contribute thought leadership and innovation that influences change and advancement of the industry.
p. Provide expertise in conceptual design and construction implementation of highly complex systems.
q. Anticipate challenges and recommend improvements and solutions for complex problems that have a broad impact on the business.
r. Make critical contributions to managing and solving highly complex and/or large technical challenges using broad perspectives to identify solutions.
s. Contributes to development of functional strategy and important organizational decisions.
t. Provide management and leadership for the continuous improvement and optimization of the manufacturing processes and innovative design concepts to provide best value for the investment.
u. Provide consultation and advise on best practices for plant design, process equipment, tools, techniques, and regulations/codes.
v. Develop departmental plans and priorities to address resource and operational challenges.
w. Direct activities to ensure compliance with federal, state and local codes.
x. Ensure safety of all equipment, facilities, processes and activities.
3. Project Management
a. Responsible for project management, leadership and direction of implementation of capital and other engineering related improvements involving the following major areas: cheese and whey processing, buildings/facilities, specifications, utilities, equipment, electrical, automation and controls, contract administration, start-up, and commissioning.
b. Responsible for development, prioritization and delivery of process engineering portfolio to meet company timeline and objective.
c. Lead all aspects of planning and development of projects from concept to completion, including: determine project objectives, design standards, specifications, criteria, timelines, budgets, resources, tasks, and supervising progress to ensure objectives are being met.
d. Assign and prioritize engineering projects, tracking progress towards completion by following timelines to attain maximum effectiveness of engineering efforts.
e. Work with engineers and project managers to assure work meets business needs, applicable codes and standards of quality.
f. Prepare process design that supports capital requests and justifications for improvement projects.
g. Review and approve documents such as purchase orders, blueprint designs, change orders, and specifications to ensure completeness and accuracy.
h. Ensures accuracy in design and cross functional collaboration to deliver accurate, scope, schedule and cost.
i. Manage coordination with procurement for the purchase and delivery of project components and equipment necessary for implementation of projects.
j. Direct the work and activities of suppliers, contractors, consultants, and designers.
4. Technical Duties
a. Manage and lead efforts to design, troubleshoot and optimize innovative processes.
b. Ensure conformance to established company standards and best practices that ensures Trademark Excellence, teach and train others.
c. Foster and cultivate partnerships with the Technology team and the Trademark Excellence function to seamlessly design all processes.
d. Lead the efforts that define, update and administer engineering design and standards and manage a design review process for projects.
e. Provide training and leadership to the engineering team members in the area of process design, new technologies, and engineering.
f. Responsible to drive innovative process design by utilizing engineering principals in the review of equipment/system designs. Utilize all opportunities to arrive at the best solutions to balance process design with other constraints, such as cost, quality, and schedule.
g. Ensure that vendor supplied new equipment designs provide innovative solutions to Grande.
h. Work with cross functional teams to review existing installations to find opportunities for continuous improvement in the areas of process design and automation, including sanitary design and CIP.
i. Responsible to ensure all new equipment and system installations are compliant with WDA, USDA, IMS and Grande requirements.
j. Ensure that process design expertise is included on the project team for large projects that require support in process design, automation, new product development and CIP systems.
k. Direct equipment audits/evaluations of vendor supplied equipment using a systematic approach that can be documented and archived for future use.
l. Assist in providing training to plant personnel on how to properly operate new equipment.
m. Collaborate with executives and managers to develop process designs and implement strategic policies and programs which ensure the protection of Grande Trademark Excellence.
n. Develop and implement standards to minimize variation in system design and protocols between production facilities with the vision that every unit operation or system and all equipment, regardless of location, could be interchangeable.
o. Manage the development, execution and review of process design and new product development across all projects and all facilities.
p. Manage the process design process through the Stage-Gate process to ensure proper design is complete and vetted at the proper time.
5. Additional Requirements
a. Ensure compliance with federal, state and local codes.
b. Provide liaison on project, facilities and equipment with regulatory agencies.
c. Participate in professional organizations to maintain current knowledge of technical innovations.

Qualifications & Requirements
Bachelors Degree in a related Engineering discipline required.
Graduate Degree Master’s degree in Engineering preferred.
Experience & Training
• Minimum of twelve (12) years of related engineering experience required.
• Must have experience working with food processing facility and equipment design.
Licenses & Certifications
• Project management certification and/or Professional Engineering license strongly preferred.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
• Knowledge of USDA, FDA, OSHA and environmental regulations, codes, and standards.
• Highly skilled in troubleshooting, diagnosing problems and recommending improvements.
• Strong planning and prioritization skills, innovation, multi-tasking, goal setting, analytical skills, adaptable, continuously looking to raise the bar for progress.
• Ability to understand, influence, drive, and negotiate with internal and external customers.
• Strong written, verbal and presentation skills.
• Advanced PC skills including Windows, Microsoft Office Suite and Engineering and design software..
• Advanced knowledge in mathematical concepts such as fractions, ratios, value analysis, thermodynamics, to resolve engineering designs and problems.
• A mobile phone is required for this position.
