Job Summary

The Supervisor, Movable Bridges and Structures (B&S) is responsible for leading a team of employees, external contractors and external consultants mandated with the construction, modification, and repair of movable railway bridges, switch heaters and Positive Train Control (PTC) backup generators. The position collaborates with B&S Managers and B&S Supervisors in the United States (U.S.). Moreover, the incumbent proactively reviews system life cycles and explores new technologies and methods for improving system reliability.

Main Responsibilities

Operations

·       Lead the Engineering operations related to the construction, modification, inspection, repair, and reliability of sixteen movable bridges including electrical, Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) and mechanical systems

·       Maintain movable bridge video surveillance cameras, marine radar systems, and communication equipment

·       Lead the Engineering operations related to the modification, inspection, repair and reliability of switch heaters and PTC backup generators

·       Lead and plan compliance with safe work procedures, Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) guidelines, as well as CN’s policies and procedures

·       Handle budgets and workforce productivity within CN’s policies

·       Communicate bridge electrical, PLC, and mechanical conditions, daily production, and inform senior management

·       Develop recommendations and execute long-term maintenance plans for movable bridges, switch heaters and PTC backup generators

Staff Management

·       Supervise and lead activities of unionized employees, engineering consultants and external contractors to ensure performance targets are met and safety is sustained

·       Provide coaching and guidance to employees through regular monitoring of employee performance

·       Apply collective agreements and company policies, including conducting investigations, recommending corrective action, and responding to grievances

Derailments and Prevention

·       Participate in activities related to derailments and disruptions in service, while working with Transportation, Mechanical, contractors and consultants to resolve cause and future prevention

·       Participate in investigations

·       Implement safe work procedures and policies

Working Conditions

The role is performed in a combination of office and outdoor environments in various types of weather conditions as well as in remote locations. Work shifts may vary and will include weekdays, weekends, and holidays. The role requires being available on-call 24/7 to respond to critical incidences. Due to the nature of the role, the incumbent must be able to meet tight deadlines, handle pressure and stress. The role requires regular travel (up to 50%) without advance notice, which will include overnight stays away from home. The incumbent must meet all medical requirements in order to work at heights and have the ability to lift up to 50 lbs.

Experience

Bridges and Structures

·       Minimum 5 years of experience in a directly related role

·       Experience in safety compliance

·       Experience working with or around heavy equipment, cranes, loaders, excavators, hydraulic tools and pneumatic tools

·       Experience in the maintenance and construction of electrical, PLC, and mechanical systems*

·       Experience in similar working conditions or regulatory and safety environments*

·       Experience handling budgets*

·       Experience in supervising a unionized workforce*

·       Experience in labour relations (e.g., interpretation of collective agreements, response to grievances, negotiations with union representatives, discipline)*

*Any experience for these above would be considered as an asset

Education/Certification/Designation

·       High School Diploma or General Educational Development (GED)

·       Valid Driver’s Licence

·       Ability to obtain Qualification Standards for Operating Crews (QSOC) qualification

·       Post-secondary education or qualification as an Electrical Engineering Technologist, PLC Technologist, or Mechanical Engineering Technologist

Technical Skills/Knowledge

·       Knowledge of the United States Operating Rules (USOR)

·       Knowledge of PLC Systems, Electrical Systems, Microsoft Office, Systems, Applications and Products (SAP), and Computer-Aided Design (CAD)

·       Excellent English verbal, reading comprehension and writing skills
