Private Lesson Swim Instructor

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Provides direct leadership, instruction and motivation for students in swimming classes. Builds positive relationships with members and program participants through effective listening and verbal skills and creatively finds ways to connect them to one another and the Y community.


  1. Be comfortable working to implement the Mission Statement of the YMCA and act as a positive role model using the Y’s core values of honesty, caring, respect and responsibility
  2. Instructs swimming lessons in accordance with YMCA guidelines, having prepared lesson plans accordingly.
  3. Builds effective, authentic relationships with students and parents; helps them connect with each other and the YMCA. Encourages parent involvement and identifies potential volunteers.
  4. Conveys information on aquatics programs and schedules and as appropriate refers students and parents to other programs.
  5. Maintains records as required (i.e. attendance, progress reports, etc.).
  6. Attends all staff meetings and trainings as scheduled.
  7. Follows all YMCA policies, rules, regulations and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures. Completes incident and accident reports as necessary.
  8. Organizes and puts away needed class equipment. Reports damaged equipment.
  9. Trains and supervises class aides as assigned.
  10. Performs other duties as assigned.


1. Certifications: CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid certification preferred

2. Must be able to demonstrate swim instructor skills in accordance with YMCA standards.

3. At least 15 years of age. No previous experience required.
