Description

Summary:

This position is responsible for new product development projects with minimal mentoring from a manager for the product categories assigned to his/her engineering responsibility.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Understands theory of operation for ignition coils.
  • Understands ignition coil standards, specifications and test methodology.
  • Develop specifications and test procedures with minimal input from manager.
  • Accountable for the testing and evaluation of assigned products.
  • Complete engineering documentation such as Engineering Change Notices and release 2D drawings independantly; complete drawings and NPR’s.
  • Support purchasing with engineering approval process for changes in product materials or vendors (includes alternative vendors).
  • Follow APQP for new product development.
  • Lead the design 2D drawings and 3D solid models from physical parts; review the design output of vendors and CAD personnel; accountable for the final design output; keep management apprised of project status and proactively communicates roadblocks.
  • Take a lead role in communicating with vendors regarding design issues.
  • Lead design reviews and team project discussions with assistance from manager.
  • Strong understanding of interactions between parts and environment.
  • Apply knowledge of material properties and manufacturing processes to new product design.
  • Understand relationships in MRP between BOMs, routings, effective dates, vendors, etc.
  • Other job activities as assigned.

Essential Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering; 5 or more years’ experience with strong Mechanical aptitude
  • Understand construction techniques of parts and assemblies and works with manager to guide production or vendors to improve cost, quality and/or performance
  • Knowledge of thermodynamics for automotive assemblies including interactions between different structures, shapes and materials during thermal shock
  • Understanding of high voltage dielectric strength and impact of corona on materials
  • Understand ignition coil primary and secondary electrical circuits
  • Knowledge of 3D SolidWorks 3D CAD software for assembly level design
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others and prioritize assigned work to meet defined deadlines; respond to changing priorities while working on multiple projects at the same time
  • Ability to travel as needed
  • Ability to maintain safe work environment
  • Advanced computer skills including data analysis, modeling, simulation and problem resolution to new product development projects
  • Working knowledge of MS Office
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to understand that data was correctly measured.

Equipment Used:

  • Measuring equipment such as micrometer, calipers and pin gages
  • Lab (vision system, microscope, X-Ray) and toolroom (rock saw, drill press, grinder) equipment.
  • Lab evaluation equipment such as power supply, waveform generator, oscilloscope DMM and LCR meter. Ability to understand that data was correctly measured.
  • Computer, telephone and other misc. office equipment

Personal Protective Equipment/Clothing Required (PPE):

  • Safety glasses and hearing protection as required.
  • ESD smock and grounding equipment as required.
