JOB SUMMARY
This position performs a variety of work associated with the maintenance of streets, sewers, grounds, and facilities and the collection of refuse and solid waste.
DESCRIPTION OF WORK
Distinguishing Characteristics of the Class
This is the entry level class in the public works department. The work involves performing a variety of semiskilled and unskilled work in maintaining village owned facilities and grounds and the street/sewer/water infrastructure. The work also includes collecting and transporting refuse, rubbish, and brush. The work involves the operation of different vehicles, machines, and equipment. The incumbent receives general supervision from the Public Works Superintendent.

- Drives dump trucks and operates tractors, street sweepers, mowers, chippers, and other specialized
- equipment.
- Does asphalt and concrete patching and crack filling and makes other street repairs.
- Assists with the construction of streets, storm sewers, water mains, and sanitary sewer mains.
- Plows and shovels snow and sands and salts streets and sidewalks.
- Installs street signs and paints street markings.
- Mows grass, rakes and picks up leaves, trims and cut downs trees and chips brush.
- Collects refuse, rubbish, brush, yard waste, and bulky waste and transports to the transfer station.
- Maintains village owned buildings, parks, recreational facilities, drainage ditches, and storm water detention basins.
- Operates sewer cleaning machines and repairs sewer and water mains, maintenance holes, and catch basins.
- Inspects and washes vehicles and equipment.
- Reads and repairs water meters.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Working Conditions
Works under field conditions; some overtime required; subject to 24-hour emergency call-in; exposure to extreme weather conditions; requires heavy lifting and strenuous physical activity; enters confined spaces.
REQUIREMENTS OF WORK
Knowledge of:
- Methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the maintenance of facilities, grounds, and public works infrastructure.
- Occupational hazards and standard safety precautions necessary in the work.
Ability to:
- Operate a variety of vehicles and equipment used in public works maintenance.
- Understand and effectively carry out oral and written instructions.
- Communicate effectively in oral and written form.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees and the general public.
Desired Qualifications
Graduation from high school; several years’ experience in a related field; possession of a valid Commercial Driver’s License; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Pay Grade 7 on the Public Works/Police Admin Compensation Plan.
