The electrification group at Mercury Marine is looking for a power electronics analysis and simulation engineer with experience in High Voltage (HV) power electronics, electrical machines, grid connected power electronics systems and controls to evaluate design reliability, performance, and capabilities of high voltage power electronics systems, electromechanical components, and integrated power conversion systems. In this position you will develop power conversion models and thermo-electric models using first principles, simulations, and testing. You will validate these models against actual hardware and use the models to guide the design and architecture of converter systems and the electric propulsion system. You will provide technical advice to tier 1 suppliers and to firmware, reliability, manufacturing test, and architecture modeling teams within Mercury Marine. You will be a key interface between electrical, mechanical, and firmware engineers working to optimize systems and maximize their performance.
With this position you will be entering our Technical Ladder, the career path for experts. You will be able to focus deeply on technology – while further pursuing your career. As you continually expand your expert knowledge, puzzle over matters, and solve problems, you will position yourself as a thought leader – thus helping our electric propulsion products to be the industry’s best similar to the globally leading technologies of Mercury Marine’s ICE based products.
Roles and Responsibilities:
- Modeling, simulation and analysis of customized HV inverters, permanent magnet synchronous machines and their controls, DC-DC converters, AC charging systems, DC fast charging systems connected to grid, and battery energy storage systems
- Develop tier 1 supplier’s power conversion models, electrical machine models to support system level simulation and analysis to ensure the products meet Mercury Marine’s performance requirements
- Lead design trade-off studies between various HV power conversion solutions including the area of thermal management
- Support Mercury’s Software & Controls Engineering in developing HV motor control
- Support Mercury’s Procurement team in sourcing efforts of HV power electronics and e-motors
- Support development of component specifications that ensure compliance to vessel, system and component requirements (including performance, EMC, high voltage safety, thermal, reliability, and durability)
- Participate in and facilitate concept reviews, design reviews, and design FMEAs
- Validate and calibrate the developed models by executing a variety of engineering tests
- Rigorously document and proactively share simulation and analysis tools and results across stakeholder engineering partners and leaders
- Support the implementation of inverter/motor model and controls for a HIL based test platform.
Required Qualifications:
- Minimum B.S. Degree in Electrical Engineering
- 5+ years of engineering experience working with HV power electronics and electrical machine control simulations
- Familiarity with the power semiconductor devices and their controls
- A strong understanding of power electronics theory, motor control, permanent magnet motors
- Proficiency in MATLAB, Simulink and multi-physics simulation software packages
- Skills in steady state, quasi steady-state, dynamic and transient analysis in utility circuits
- Excellent communication and presentation skills with ability to present data analysis and simulation results internally and to suppliers
Preferred Qualifications:
- MS or Ph.D Degree in Electrical Engineering with Power Electronics emphasis
- Familiarity with high voltage EV’s including three phase Inverters, DC-DC converters and Onboard Charging (OBC) systems, DC fast charging systems connected to grid
- Knowledge of automotive energy storage subsystems (HV Battery) and BMS
- Experience with Hardware In Loop(HIL) based platforms
