Position Title:Director of Math and Science Services

This position promotes and supports the learning experience of Marian University students by, providing leadership and oversight to the math and science services of the Learning Center. Moreover, the Director oversees the math and science tutors, facilitating the selection, training, and evaluation of the student-tutor positions for math and science. The Director collaborates and connects with other Departments across campus to serve as a resource for math and science. Additionally, the director will serve as a part-time advisor for students majoring in Math and the Sciences.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Administrative (30%)
    1. Plans, manages, and oversees the daily functions, operations, and activities of the Math and Science portion of the Learning Center.
    2. Participates in the development, implementation, and administration of goals, objectives, policies, priorities and resources for the center.
    3. Collects, verifies, validates, maintains and reports data regarding utilization of math and science services in the Learning Center
    4. Assesses and evaluates procedures, services and methods for continuous improvement with the math and science areas, collaborating with other professional staff in the Learning Center to better serve the student learners of Marian University.
    5. Reviews admission materials, Accuplacer results, and students’ transcripts to provide math course placement for incoming students, using multiple measures. Make recommendations and assist students with CLEP testing. Collaborates with Math Department to update requirements for placement.
    6. Maintains and updates the online sign-up platform (MS Bookings) for the Writing Center.
    7. Collaborates with the Director of Writing and Reading Services in facilitating the services of the Marian University Learning Center.
    8. Remains up-to-date with advancing learning and study strategies.
    9. Attends professional development workshops.
  2. Peer Tutor Program—Math and Science (20%)
    1. Promotes, hires, trains, and supervises student tutors for Math and Science courses.
    2. Tracks and verifies student tutors’ work hours and payroll information with timeclock dashboard and human resource protocols.
    3. Documents and addresses problematic behaviors of student employees.
    4. Maintains and monitors College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) certificate program regarding to Peer Tutor Certification and training compliance.
  3. Learning Support and Outreach (25%)
    1. Assesses students’ skills and develop appropriate learning opportunities and instructional materials to address student math and science needs
    2. Creates and provides students with appropriate resource materials (e.g. online content, textbooks, handouts, computer instruction) to assist in their learning for math and/or science.
    3. Works with students who receive Academic Status Reports (ASR) or at-risk students who are referred to the Learning Center for Math and/or Science.
    4. Coordinates and facilitates a variety of study groups for math, biology, chemistry, and physics courses
    5. Communicates regularly with the math and science faculty in the interest of student learning and success and develop rapport with Chairs in designated areas of study.
    6. Promotes Learning Center services during New Student Events, beginning of terms, and other programming/resources.
    7. Presents appropriate workshops related to academic student success.
    8. Maintain a positive work environment by cooperating in a professional manner with the university community
  4. Advising – (20%)
    1. Advises students individually and/or within groups regarding academic core and/or departmental requirements, appropriate class selection, academic policies and procedures, and campus resources for social work and psychology majors
    2. Assist students in identifying long term goals and career plans, both academically and personally.
    3. Guide students to meet graduation requirements in a timely fashion while preparing them to meet their individualized future goals.
    4. Advise all students and assist in their exploration of academic programs whilst focusing on academic policies and procedures, and available resources
    5. Assist with Admission events, New Student Registration, New Student Orientation to facilitate advising sessions and assisting students
    6. Maintain confidential advising records
    7. Utilize information systems, as necessary, to aid in the delivery of advising services.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES – 5%

  1. Performs other work-related duties as assigned. 

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, and SKILLS REQUIRED:

  1. Holds a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in a related filed of math, science, or education.
  2. Minimally two years of experience working in remediation and/or tutoring of math or science. A combination of education and experience may be considered.
  3. Has a minimum of two to four years of full-time work experience in a professional capacity.
  4. Ability to develop effective working relationships and team development
  5. Strong oral and written communication skills.
  6. Strong motivational skills and commitment to student academic success.
  7. Working knowledge of computers and application software.
  8. High regard for confidentiality both within and outside the Marian University Community.
  9. Willingness to support the Mission and Core Values of the University.
