This month, we had the opportunity to shadow the team at the City of Fond du Lac Fire Department. This was an experience like none other. I (Tracy) had the chance to ride along in the ambulance and Jill had the chance to ride in the fire truck (the proper lingo for both vehicles is “rig”). These were real calls and we were both incredibly impressed with the behavior of the team.
We started our time with lunch. Now, this might not be a big deal anywhere else, but here, this is the time the group gets together to dialogue. And I mean, dialogue. They actually talk to each other. There is such a family vibe here, we could feel it. When the meal was over, everyone chipped in to help.
We then toured the station (on South Main Street). This facility is wonderful. The men and women who work at this station have the amenities they need to be successful in both their work and their well-being.
We took some time to ask questions about the work environment. Every person there said they liked the family-like feel of the work environment, the hours (24 on, 24 off, 24 on, 24 off, 24 on, 4 days off), and the fact the job is never the same. The variety keeps them active, informed, and involved.
Those who work in the fire department work hard. On average, there are 22 calls per day, per station. In between calls, the men and women participate in training and documentation as it pertains to the calls they go on. There was not a dull moment while we were there.

In the end, this was an exceptional experience. Everyone was so kind and willing to answer our questions (and we asked a LOT).
