Job Details


Under the direction of the Director of Safety, Health and Environmental and with a dotted line to the Plant Manager(s), be a resource for all Safety related activities and issues and execute the safety processes as defined by the current Corporate Safety Goals for the assigned facilities/functions. Ensure a safety focused culture and assist in the mentoring and education of all Associates and teams as it relates to the safety of Associates. Oversee the Process Safety Management system for the assigned facilities and company.

This position will support the Rolling Meadows, Distribution Center and Rubicon facilities.

Job Duties & Responsibilities

1. Ensure Associate Safety at Assigned Facility(s)

  • Independently perform a variety of complex safety responsibilities with minimal supervision and technical guidance.
  • Serve as an important resource for complex technical questions and provide guidance and mentoring to colleagues with less experience (Safety and PSM).
  • Ensure that the assigned facilities have all necessary documentation completed, including the creation and analysis of statistical data, industry best practices, compliance documentation, and important documentation for legal requirements in the assigned facilities.
  • Lead the incident investigation and recommend corrective action (if warranted) and preventative actions based upon incidents and/or trends. Helps to determine the cause and identifies the means for prevention.
  • Develops, recommends and implements new safety policies and/or strategic objectives.
  • Prepares various forms of written communication including, but not limited to, company newsletter articles, policies, facility-specific safety plans, procedures and correspondence.
  • Lead the coordination of organizational response to significant safety emergencies including ensuring that medical and/or emotional support is provided.
  • Participate in facility audits with the manufacturing team, and help facility management with the implementation of recommendations and strategies.
  • Partner with facility managers to represent the organization during on-site OSHA inspections, responding to OSHA complaints, and resolving OSHA citations through process improvement or legal challenge.
  • Provide monthly metrics and reporting of information to support variable compensation goals and other programs as required.
  • Supports and encourages the Behavior Based Safety program, while providing feedback to Associates on safe work practices.
  • Support Engineering (Including Sanitary Design) and Plant for Safety related projects. Lead some of these efforts with outside resources. Ensure compliance with requirements and completion on a timely basis. This includes recommendation of SHE capital equipment purchases and other equipment to ensure compliance with rules and regulations.
  • Provide information for Workers Compensation requests (incident investigations) as required.

2. DOT, Safety & Environmental Regulatory Compliance

  • Identify, analyze, communicate, and coordinate the facility-specific OSHA compliance efforts including, but not limited to, OSHA 300 logs, Hazard Communication, Emergency Response, LOTO, Confined Space Entry, Blood Borne Pathogens, PPE, Fire Prevention, and Lift Truck Operation.
  • Communicates upcoming changes and new regulations that will affect the assigned facilities.
  • Develop and provide training modules and documents for compliance. Lead training exercises as needed for facilities.
  • Partner with corporate purchasing on PPE and safety equipment compliance and selection.
  • Lead the safety observations at assigned Grande facility(s) and ensure compliance as determined by the Director of Safety, Health and Environmental.
  • Coordinate with external environmental services providers to work with individual facilities to obtain info for and complete Tier II and Form R chemical reporting. Utilizing these services identify improvement opportunities for chemical storage, handling, and spill response.
  • Ensure that the DOT Driver Qualification process is followed and that all DOT DQ file forms are completed upon hire. Audit DOT DQ files annually to ensure that DOT medical certifications and driving records are kept current.

3. Process Safety Management (PSM) & Risk Management Plan (RMP)

  • Provide program direction and dotted line direction for the site PSM Specialists.
  • Develop Process Safety Management programs and procedures for all 14 elements of PSM.
  • Implement, coordinate, and oversee the PSM and RMP program activities to ensure compliance with OSHA’s PSM standard and EPA’s RMP regulations.
  • Liaison and coordination with outside resources and consultants.
  • Development, organization and maintenance of process safety information (documentation, refrigeration drawings, supporting files, meeting and training materials, etc.).
  • Coordinate and participate in PSM inspections and audits.
  • Coordinate initial orientation and overview of PSM for facilities.
  • Develop refrigeration training needs and assist in coordinate refrigeration training for PSM.
  • Provide recommendations and on-going program improvements.
  • In coordination with mechanical contractors and engineers develop and document total quantity of ammonia in each plant system in compliance with PSM.
  • Participate in investigation of PSM events.
  • Monitor and communicate regulatory changes for PSM and RMP.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of industry best practices for process safety/risk management.

Licenses & Certifications

  • 30 hour OSHA compliance course required.
  • ASP/CSP (Associate Safety Professional/Certified Safety Professional) Certification is a plus.
  • PSM Certification required-Garden State or similar

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Comprehensive knowledge of occupational safety best practices, OSHA regulations, and disability management
  • Ability to be analytical and decisive
  • Intermediate to advanced level of operations in Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook and HRIS
  • Strong communication (written and verbal) through all levels of associates and management
  • Ability to operate in a fast paced environment with multiple deadlines and being able to meet deadlines while working through interruptions
  • Strong collaboration skills for working with Associates in different departments and at all levels of the organization
  • Strong understanding of the PSM and RMP programs to the facility
  • Strong understanding with the ability to lead updates for the “Site Plan”.




Bachelors Degree or better in Occupational Safety.



Four (4) or more years of related safety management experience in a manufacturing environment required.

At least one (1) or more years of related Process Safety Management experience required.


Bachelors Degree in Safety Management or other related field required. An equivalent level of experience may be considered.
